Mobile Support Technician
Reports to: IT Coordinator with day-to-day functional supervision provided by the Communications Technician, Information Technology
Job Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, but must be flexible in hours, and provide on call support as needed.
Salary: $51,064 to $60,072 annually
Reporting to the IT Coordinator with day-to-day functional supervision provided by the Communications Technician, the Mobile Support Technician’s role is to provide first level support for all technology related equipment deployed in patrol vehicles. The Mobile Support Technician will also be responsible for the installation and removal of all mobile communication and computer equipment in patrol vehicles.
Install, configure, test, monitor, and troubleshoot end user equipment in the vehicles including cabling, software, and hardware.Perform on-site analysis in police vehicles, including diagnosis and resolution of complex computer equipment issues.Support the installation and implementation of communication equipment in the patrol vehicles.Accurately document instances of hardware failure, repair, installation, and removal.Conduct first level troubleshooting for mobile workstations, including Netmotion, I/Mobile, Citrix, and mobile client software.Re-image mobile workstations.Complete software deployments/updates on mobile workstations using Afaria.Support communication equipment (firmware update, configuration changes, etc including communication modems.Perform regular checks on radio infrastructure equipment.Support Wi-Fi infrastructures.Liaise with IT staff regarding issues identified by the front-line.Participate in on-the-job training and/or attend appropriate training courses in order to understand the radio communication systems and keep current with changes in radio communications and mobile technology.Provide on-call support as required.Perform other duties, as assigned, which are related to the major responsibilities of the job.
Working Conditions: Must be able to work in awkward positions for extended periods of time to install communication and computer equipment. Work performed predominantly in the Fleet Garage area. Duties may involve exposure to highly confidential and sensitive information which cannot be shared except in the course of judicial proceedings or pursuant to the order of a Command Officer or Supervisor.
Physical & Sensory Demands / Dexterity: Assignments will involve activities such as reading, writing, keyboarding, listening, talking, sitting, walking, standing, reaching, bending/stooping, and lifting.
Training: Three (3) months on-the-job training will be provided.
Education: Minimum two (2) year Community College Diploma in Computer Science or a related field (e.g. Electronics Engineering Technology/Technician program An equivalent combination of at least three (3) years of education/training and experience may be considered.Experience: Minimum one (1) year previous experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mobile/wireless technology, computers, and peripherals required, preferably in fleet vehicles.Certificates / Licenses / Apprenticeships: Valid Ontario Driver’s License required. Microsoft Certification and/or CompTIA Certification is desirable [e.g. Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS or Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS); CompTIA A CompTIA NetworkGood understanding of IP data networks and Microsoft Windows operating systems.Ability to absorb and retain information quickly.Keen attention to detail.Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.Highly self-motivated and directed.Experience installing mobile/electronic equipment in vehicles would be an asset.Experience in installing mobile radio communication equipment would be an asset.Working knowledge of the following is desirable:Citrix or Microsoft Remote Desktop Services softwareNetmotion or other mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) softwareIntergraph’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) softwareAfaria or other mobile device management softwareMicrosoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or Symantec Ghost computer deployment software
